The University of Virginia School of Law seeks to hire an Assistant or Associate Director, Office of Private Practice to join the Law School's Career Development Office. This is a new position in the Office of Private Practice reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean for Career Development. The Office of Private Practice (OPP) is a dynamic, tight-knit, and entrepreneurial team. OPP enjoys working with the Law School's exceptional students and take pride in its ability to innovate in the career counseling space and devise creative approaches to evolving hiring landscapes. The teams over 45 years of private practice experience and over 35 years of career counseling experience has allowed it to achieve top-of-industry results over many years.

OPP assists current law students and graduates of the Law School in all aspects of the search for legal jobs in the private sector and has achieved results that rank at the top of national law schools. The Assistant or Associate Director will be expected to contribute to the smooth operation of OPP, provide a high level of student support, and further the office's goal of continuous improvement.

Specific duties of this position include:

  • Help cultivate and support strong relationships with employers, including participating in employer meetings and assisting employers in their efforts to connect with students.
  • Assist with planning and executing OPP events, including interview programs and multi-employer events.
  • Serve as the point-of-contact for key vendors and evaluate and maintain vendor relationships.
  • Participate in designing, implementing and co-presenting programming to educate students about legal markets, hiring practices, professional skills, and other career-related topics.
  • Assist in creating resources, communications, and website materials for students and graduates of the law school.
  • Help advise student organizations on planning and executing career-related events.
  • Assist with and participate in the student counseling process.
  • Help collect, verify, and analyze career outcome and employer-related data to assist in reporting and strategic planning.
  • Assist in managing other aspects of OPP's multi-faceted program.
  • Other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience: This position will be filled at either the Assistant or Associate Director level depending on the candidate's education and experience.
  • Candidates for the Assistant Director
  • Bachelor's degree and at least two years of relevant experience required
  • Candidates for the Associate Director
  • Bachelor's degree and at least five years of relevant experience required; or
  • Master's degree and at least two years of experience in a student-facing role in higher education or other educational setting, including career development and placement, student counseling, employer relations, or other comparable positions. Work experience accrued as part of a degree program will be considered. Preferred Experience:
  • Experience in higher education administration, in legal recruiting, or in legal practice. All candidates' minimum requirements:
  • Excellent interpersonal, project management, writing, and communications skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Positive and outgoing demeanor.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Familiarity/facility with MS suite (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint). This is a full-time University Managerial and Professional Staff position with benefits.
