The University of Virginia is seeking a Senior Pipefitter/Steamfitter to contribute expertise to the Energy & Utilities team of Facilities Management. The Energy & Utilities Department maintains and operates high voltage electric systems, central heating and chilled water plants, water storage and pumping facilities, and the associated distribution systems required to transport these services to most University buildings.

Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic, and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds, in addition to managing capital construction and renovation for University owned and leased properties.

Position Summary :

Senior Pipefitter/Steamfitters are responsible for similar duties as Pipefitter/Steamfitters, however, they operate with additional skill level and independence. They perform maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting in the field on high pressure heating systems, chilled water, domestic hot water, domestic water and fire pipes, gas, storm sewer, sanitary sewer and building systems for piping, equipment, and distribution systems. Senior Pipefitter/Steamfitters provide technical guidance to Welders performing welds for HVAC and plumbing trades, heat plant, and Health System areas requiring welding services.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical assistance to the following: HVAC, plumbing trades and heating plants, as well as operating room and clinical areas.
  • Repair, maintain, and install steam lines, chilled water lines, gas lines, suction lines, and instruments.
  • Perform installations or replacements of water, storm, sanitary sewer, steam and heating hot water, condensate, chilled water piping systems, and related equipment.
  • Fabricate tanks and structural supports, and weld high pressure lines and pressure vessels.
  • Read and interpret construction documents and shop drawings.
  • Anticipate job requirements and order materials.
  • Increase familiarity of area equipment and piping systems of all buildings.
  • Notify customers and supervisors of status of work and any complications, which will change the schedule.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to Pipefitters and inspect the quality of work. Maintain accurate records of work.
  • Promote responsibility and efficient work among team members by giving clear and descriptive instructions.
  • Perform scheduled inspections.
  • Develop an increasing knowledge of types of materials and equipment used on projects for the various utility systems.
  • Work individually or on a team to execute repairs or installations.
  • Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, and National Electrical Code.
Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: Seven years of experience. Four years of experience in plumbing or mechanical trade.

Selected candidates will be required to complete all required background checks and health screens prior to the first day of employment.

Compensation:

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $28.00 - $32.00 per hour ($58,240 - $66,560 per year). Possibly eligible for Working Conditions Pay Differential of $2 per hour, when appropriate. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits () . Employee benefits package highlights include:
